Your logo is the most important part of your brand. It is normally the first thing your customers will see. It must be memorable and make your business stand out. Choosing company logo is an essential step in any business start up.

We’ve put together a list of top logo design tips for you to consider when choosing your company logo.

TYPE

Logos tend to fall into one of 3 categories.

Whilst symbol based logos are great, they require high levels of awareness to be effective. We’d recommend using a font based or illustrative logo to begin with.

COLOUR

Colours convey meaning. Red implies passion. Green implies nature. And Blue implies trust. Whilst choosing your logo colours is often down to personal preference, it’s worthwhile taking a look at what the research suggests. Try matching what you want your company to represent with a colour which portrays the same message.

Also, be aware that your logo needs to work in full colour and in black and white so choose colours that work in both formats.

FONT

There are 3 main types of fonts to choose from.

LAYOUT

You’ll use your logo everywhere so think about how it would fit into different situations. For example, how will it look in your website header? What about as your profile picture on your Facebook page?

Top Logo Design Tip – if your logo uses an icon, you can use this as your social media avatar (profile picture) instead of your whole logo.

SCALABILITY

Make sure your logo is scalable so it works in all sizes, from a business card to a van wrap. Bold lines and simple shapes are advisable.

BE UNIQUE

Choosing a unique logo will help you to stand out from the crowd and increase your customers’ recognition of your brand. Take a look at your competitors’ branding and try and choose a logo design that would differentiate your company from theirs.

REFLECT YOUR BUSINESS

Consider incorporating what your business does into your logo design so at first glance your customers have a pretty good idea about what you offer. For example, using plant related imagery in gardener’s logo. You can also be less literal by illustrating a key benefit you offer such as using a lightning bolt to suggest a speedy service.

MAKE SURE YOU LOVE IT!

You will see your logo every day for as long as you operate. Make sure you will love it today, tomorrow and ten years from now.
